OPEN INVITATION, POLICY DISCUSSION: The annual 2006 AACHE conference will discuss the ramifications of government policies at the local, state and national levels regarding education, funding, immigration, border issues, politics and all matters affecting the continued presence of Latinas/os in higher education, including a Mexican perspective on these matters. Current local, state, and federal proposed legislation and policy such as the Dream Act will be discussed, as well as xenophobic attitudes toward immigrants and their effects on Chicanas/os in higher education.
TENTATIVE CONFERENCE TOPICS: Critical policy makers’ perspectives and the impact of immigration policy on the successful recruitment and retention of Latina/o students in institutions of higher education; consequences of Proposition 200; media representation of border issues; the Dream Act; funding for English Language Learners; the 2006 immigration marches, the role of coalitions, advocacy by faculty, staff, and students. You may also suggest your own related topic.
SUBMISSION CRITERIA: Author’s name, address, credentials, and a personal biographical synopsis of the author.
